It’s not every day you get to return one of Andre Agassi’s backhands or be his partner on the court for doubles rallies. I can now say, trust me, it’s better by far to be on the same side of the net as this tennis legend.
Agassi came to Washington Friday to help raise money for The Washington Tennis and Education Foundation. What we thought was going to be a quick handshake and photo turned out to be quite an experience for fans who happen to play on weekends. He stayed on the court for more than two hours hitting with a couple of dozen players. He was a true sport and trooper.
For Andre, it’s all about the kids. He knows the work the WTEF does on behalf of at-risk youth in our area. The program on and off the court instills self confidence, and life skills and serves as an important after-school experience. The annual dinner and auction that night drew a record number of guests and contributors. Since his emotional retirement on center court at the US Open after 20 years of professional competition, Andre has focused on children. The school he built in his hometown of Vegas is a model for communities around the country. While many other sports figures who retire go into play-by-play announcing or fade away, Andre is creating a future based on giving. “Giant” may sound cliche, but it’s no exaggeration.
Not only do a have a picture from that memorable day, but he left his SPF 30 spray bottle he uses on his head beside the court … so when everyone else was gone, I had a cool souvenir.
