Pass The Guacamole

Today is Cinco de Mayo, and since I am the only Mexican-American at work today I feel that it is my duty to write a blog about the historic day.

First I want to start off by saying that I’m no Cinco de Mayo expert, in fact every year I Google its history just to remind myself why I suddenly crave a margarita.

Amazingly, Mexico does not celebrate Cinco de Mayo like the U.S. does, (I’m not referring to the drunken charades that are sure to take place this evening).  Mexico does not even recognize the 5th of May as a federal holiday.  Imagine my disappointment when friends from Mexico asked me why we celebrate Cinco de Mayo.  It’s hard to believe that while tonight Americans will chant “VIVA MEXICO” Mexicans will wonder why?

Ireland has a parade on St. Patrick’s Day, so where’s the love?

In Mexico, May is one of the most celebrated months because there are so many holidays: Teachers Day, Labor Day, Mother’s Day, etc. I like to think that there’s just not enough days in March to throw in an extra holiday, Fortunately for Mexico, Americans love Cinco de Mayo and I’m pretty sure we have it covered, in that case, VIVA MEXICO!
